name: Barnaby Brooks, Jr.
age: 15
gender: Male
year in school: Sophomore
appearance:
Tall and lanky, Barnaby is on his way to becoming a very gorgeous young man. Around five foot seven and one hundred thirty-five pounds, he's rather on the slim side but he keeps himself fit. While he's mostly an average teenager, he tends to eat more healthy foods than he does junk. His skin, in addition to this little 'perfect' image he's built up, is nearly flawless, as he tries to avoid scars and treats acne blemishes the moment they surface. He's got a full head of blonde hair consisting of bangs that reach his eyebrows and locks that curl outward at the end. His eyes are bright green, and his lashes are dark and notably long, framed by rectangular, thin-framed glasses. He's got a pristine-white smile, which... would look absolutely adorable were he to actually smile around people. His bone structure is rather angular, chin round and sharp and nose slim but pointing up at the tip. His lips are also rather small. Most of Barnaby is all bones and little padding.
However, Barnaby's got some of the pissiest, most miserable facial expressions. He usually sports a scowl or a frown, or sometimes stupid obliviousness. More often than not, his eyes are narrowed, either in irritation or deep concentration when he works. Often lost in thought, he tends to look far too serious when for a teenager when he's thinking. Barnaby seldom smiles for anyone, often only happy when he's talking to someone he cares for. His normal self in private settings is actually quite cranky.
personality:
From the start, Barnaby Brooks Jr. looks like a teenage heartthrob: tall, good looks, kind smile, charming personality. And in many ways, Barnaby fits that mold almost perfectly. He's very friendly and courteous when it comes to dealing with the public and knowing what he should do. He knows how to handle being in the spotlight with a modest aura, and tends to accept praise and cheers with a smile and a polite thank you. Not much of a bragging individual, he's pleasant conversation and tends to keep to himself when in a crowd. When attending public events or volunteering in the lead role for a presentation, he puts on his most well-behaved, charismatic smile and does his best to appear cheerful.
But not all is just fun and games in the life of Barnaby. Growing up without parents gave him nothing but a heavy heart. He tries not to let it get too much to him, but being only a teenager, it affects him in many ways. It's made him distant and almost cold to others, but never too unpleasant. Not unless he runs into a dead end, in which his collected facade begins to crack.
Frustration is usually what peels away that calm exterior, the prime example being the one thing that frustrates Barnaby the most: his parents' death. Barnaby's parents were murdered before his eyes, his only memory of the culprit being a mysterious, unexplained tattoo on the man's skin. Because of this, any time an uncommon symbol is mentioned or catches Barnaby's eye, he's quickly riled up and tends to try to find out more about it almost immediately. Outside of focusing on school or training, he tends to get distracted thinking about the night they died and witnessing the murder, and it shakes him to this day. While it's an unhealthy obsession, it's one he's chosen to keep; he isn't a fan of therapy or seeking outside help, just wanting to hang onto this burden by himself. He's prone to become more violent towards a criminal who bears the same tattoo, and his judgment takes a turn for the reckless. His temper, sadly enough, is one of his biggest flaws. He tries harder to control it, but being young and emotional, this is a difficult thing for him.
It doesn't help that Barnaby is also sometimes quite difficult to get along with. When it comes to class assignments or getting along with others, he does his best to stay on a neutral side, but he doesn't go out of his way to make friends. It takes him a long time to warm up to someone, but being in his way too much tends to make him frustrated and rather snippy. While he's normally quiet and restrained, he will snap if he's riled up too much. He doesn't get close to his peers because he doesn't see any of them as friends.
Barnaby doesn't have friends. He has a difficult time connecting with people on an emotional basis. When the charming boy facade falls, one's left with a blunt, almost tactless Barnaby who acts on his own interests and what personally drives him. Most of his motivation is just to find out the murderer of his parents and to understand and stop those who bear the symbol. But outside of that, he's odd around others. He doesn't spend time for fun social interactions, and he doesn't celebrate his birthday. He hates Christmas. He doesn't have hobbies, save for looking up clues, and he can't have a normal conversation to save his life. He barely sleeps, often having nightmares about that night or the symbol or the possible meaning of the symbol, so he's pretty jumpy. Because of the sleeping issues, Maverick had taken him to get a few sleep-aids to see if they'll help, but he's not even sure he wants to take them.
The only few individuals he's been able to connect with on a more emotional level are his old maid and sitter, Samantha Taylor, and his surrogate father and old family friend, Albert Maverick. Samantha had been around since Barnaby was little, and he often refers to her as an 'aunt'. When his parents were killed, she became his only true 'family' left and he treasures her dearly. She's very sweet and he tends to call her when he just needs a motherly, familiar face to speak to. She also bakes him a crumble cake for his birthday each year. Maverick too had been part of Barnaby's life before his parents died; when he was in the orphanage, he spent lots of time with Maverick, treating this man like a father figure. Maverick is one of the few people Barnaby truly confides in, to the point where Barnaby finds himself in the older man's office whenever he's having a bad day and just needs advice. Besides his parents, these are the only two he truly grew close to. He has problems trusting anyone else.
powers/abilities:
Barnaby has enhanced speed, strength, durability, agility, and hearing, but only for a short amount of time. He's only been able to use them consistently and in combination for five or ten minutes, but the longer and more intense he uses them, the longer he has to wait to regain his strength. Outside of strength and agility together, something that takes much concentration and practice to do, he has small spurts of using each part individually (such as hearing a few seconds of a conversation happing a few dozen feet away or running at a very fast speed for a lap or three around the track) but he has to focus when using them consistently. Being as young and inexperienced as he is, he's only been able to use it once for the full duration but it had exhausted him for the entire rest of the day. He can only use them for seconds or minutes at a time, with a longer amount of break in between depending on how long he focuses on using them.
history (AU):
Barnaby was once a cheerful young boy who lived with his two, nice parents in a happy expensive white-collar neighborhood in Syracuse, NY. He had a pretty sweet life. His parents had money and he had modest birthday parties and liked cute little robots. Although he was a mutant from when he was a toddler, he lived in a nice, welcoming neighborhood. However, his calm and seemingly-normal life was thrown to the ground and shattered into a million pieces when a jerkass working for a mysterious criminal organization decided to murder them cold blood and start a ridiculous fire to mask the evidence on the Christmas Eve following his fourth birthday, leaving the poor child orphaned and traumatized. All Barnaby managed to remember about the night was the tattoo on the man's hand and the silhouette of aforementioned jerkass in the dark, flaming building.
This gave Barnaby a new driving force in life, to not only find out who murdered his parents but also to answer the #1 question, "Why?" Barnaby began collecting articles and news clippings of anything revolving around the murder or the incident, trying to understand the symbol he saw. And through that, he began to practice his own abilities, learning to control them better so he wouldn't have too much trouble attending a normal school or living with other children. His parents' boss, a family friend by the name of Albert Maverick, had gotten him into a fairly nice and accepting orphanage, and while he had quite a bit of money to his name, he still needed someone to watch out for him. Maverick had taken on this role, giving Barnaby an open ear or a shoulder to cry on or even just a night away from the troubles plaguing his young mind. As Barnaby was too young for Maverick to care for, and Maverick far too busy to adopt him, he sent him to live in a caring and calm environment, all the while remaining in contact and being a consistent and trustworthy mentor to the young boy. And with his old housemaid and nanny, Samantha Taylor, sending him birthday cake and calling to check on him often, Barnaby had two nice, older individuals watching out for him.
Throughout most of elementary and middle school, Barnaby didn't have many friends, just acquaintances he sometimes talked or ate lunch with. He wasn't an unpleasant boy to be around, just very distant. But even so, because he was so pretty, he had gained a little fanclub at his middle school, filled with a few girls who bought fake glasses and cut or dyed their hair blonde to match him. He learned rather quickly that he could use his looks to his advantage, often tossing around the idea of going into acting or modeling because it could get him somewhere far with it even if he didn't care much for the attention. Not only that, but being taken under Maverick's wing allowed him to accompany the older man to many business functions, so he learned to conduct himself quite well in the public eye. Because of this, he grew to be very polite and proper, almost uptight.
Shortly after finishing ninth grade, Maverick decided to propose an offer: because of Barnaby's excellent grades and good behavior, he figured it would be a good idea to send the young boy to the Xavier Academy of Higher Learning. As a boarding school, Barnaby wouldn't have to worry about being seen or treated as just another orphan or having to deal with some of the distractions. He could focus on both his studies and strengthening his abilities, as well as (hopefully) find a place where he could feel a bit more at ease while being a mutant. To top off the deal, Maverick would help him secure an apartment of his own, and probably even a job, once he graduated. Barnaby thought of it as early 'aging out' of the orphanage system and was quick to take Maverick's offer. After applying and Maverick pulling a few strings, Barnaby was sent to transfer to the Xavier Academy.
